The first-ever full-size digital replica of the Titanic has been created – and experts say it could unlock the mysteries of the world’s most famous shipwreck.

Scientists have created what they call a “digital twin” of the passenger liner that sank in the Atlantic on its maiden voyage in 1912 after hitting an iceberg southampton To new York.

Around 1,500 people lost their lives in the sinking – to this day it is one of the worst shipping disasters in world history.

The shipwreck’s digital twin was created using deep-sea mapping of the real Titanic, which lies 12,000 feet (3,800 m) deep in the Atlantic.

It is so detailed that the 3D images even show the serial number on a ship’s propeller blade.

And experts believe that the digital replica could be used by scientists to find out new details about the sinking of the passenger ship.

“Game Changing”

Parks Stephenson, a Titanic expert who has studied the ship for the past 20 years, described the project as a “real game-changer”.

“What we are seeing for the first time is an accurate and truthful representation of the entire wreckage and debris site,” he said.

“I see details that none of us have ever seen before and that allows me to build on everything we’ve learned so far and see the wreck in a new light.”

“We have up-to-date data that engineers can use to study the true mechanisms behind the breakup and sinking, getting even closer to the true story of the Titanic disaster.”

“This is the beginning of a new chapter for the next generation of Titanic exploration, research and analysis.”

Titanic wreck to get extra protection

The digital twin was created by deep-sea specialist Magellan using more than 715,000 images and full 4K video footage of the wreck captured by two submersibles named Romeo and Juliet.

The submersibles mapped every millimeter of the wreck, which split in two as it sank, down to the smallest detail. They also mapped a three-mile debris field surrounding the wreck.

Previous optical images of the ship were limited by the poor lighting conditions and the often poor water quality around the wreck.

Titanic “As Never Seen Before”

Magellan’s Gerhard Seiffert, who led the expedition’s planning, said the company’s digital twin provides a “highly accurate photorealistic 3D model” of the wreck.

“This model will allow people to zoom out and look at the whole thing for the first time,” he said.

“By shooting this 3D model we are able to visualize the wreck in a whole new way, there are all sorts of amazing little details to see.”

“This is the Titanic as no one has seen it before.”

Richard Parkinson, founder of Magellan, described the results of his team’s project as “amazing”.

“During the course of the Titanic project, we collected enormous amounts of data – around 7,150,000 images and around 16 terabytes of data,” he said.

“We expect this data to be about 10 times larger than any underwater 3D model ever created before.”
