A newly released video shows an Iowa police officer desperately holding on to the hood of a suspect’s car during a wild police chase in 2021.

Dramatic body footage and dashcam footage, released by Carroll Police, show the moment Officer Patrick McCarty grabs the hood and then the roof of Dennis Guider Jr.’s car before being thrown into a ditch – the impact breaks his back, according to KCCI News.

McCarty stopped the car on March 5, 2021 and informed Guider, who was in the passenger seat, that Illinois had a warrant out for his arrest.

“I hate to be the one to tell you this, but it sounds like you have an Illinois warrant,” McCarty said in video captured by his bodycam.

He calmly asked him to get out of the vehicle, but instead the driver got out and Guider got behind the wheel, according to video obtained by local police.

As the car slowly inched forward, McCarty drew his gun and stepped in front of the vehicle.

But Guider, 29, continued to drive forward, causing the officer to jump onto the hood and point his gun at him through the car’s windshield.

“Stop the damn car!” McCarty yelled at him and smashed the windshield as other officers arrived at the scene.

Instead, Guider sped away at about 50 miles per hour with the officer still perched on the hood of the car.

Dashcam footage from another police squad car shows McCarty struggling to reposition himself, holding on to the roof of the car as Guider speeds down a dirt road.

The car went into a ditch and bounced off, sending McCarty flying and landing on his back, the video said.

Officer McCarty was later thrown and landed on his back while the driver continued his escape.

“I’m fine man get him,” the officer called to his partner as Guider drove off. “I’m fine. Go get him.”

It was later revealed that McCarty broke his back when he was thrown from the car.

According to the Des Moines Register, Guider pleaded guilty to grievous vehicle injury and was sentenced to up to five years in prison.

He claimed he feared for his life as the officer drew his gun and jumped onto the car.
