Atlanta grandmother stabbed to death in garage in gated community
A 77-year-old grandmother was found stabbed to death in her own garage in a gated community in suburban Atlanta on Saturday.
Eleanor Bowles was found dead by her son around 5:30pm – hours after 23-year-old Antonio Brown allegedly broke into her Buckhead home and stabbed her in a carjacking gone awry, officials said.
Police believe Brown broke into Bowles’ garage around 11:30 a.m. and was attempting to steal her 2021 Lexus RS350 when she walked in and interrupted the alleged theft.
Then he allegedly stabbed her several times and drove away in her car, police said. The vehicle was located and recovered by DeKalb County police Saturday night.
It’s unclear how Brown gained access to the gated neighborhood.
Bowles’ son was planning to visit his mother over the holidays when he arrived at the home on Paces West Terrace on Saturday night to find her lifeless and bloodied body in the garage. The police pronounced her dead at the scene.
“The son came home to visit his mother for the holidays…” Atlanta Deputy Chief Charles Hampton Jr. said during a news conference. “This is not how a family should spend their holiday season mourning and mourning the death of a loved one.”
Brown was arrested Monday and charged with murder, assault, possession of a knife, elder abuse and hijacking a motor vehicle. He was committed to the Fulton County Jail.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said someone recognized Brown in the photo of a person of interest that officers released and police called, leading to his arrest.
“The murder of Ms. Bowels is understandably shocking to our community. My heart aches for these family members,” Dickens said during a news conference announcing Brown’s arrest.
He also announced the arrest of a third suspect in the killings of a 12-year-old and a 15-year-old last month.
“I share the outrage and heartache of our community,” Dickens said of the recent tragedy. “Let me be very clear to those who want to cause harm in our community, who want to commit these crimes — if you pull a gun or draw a knife in our town to hurt, hurt or kill someone, you will arrested and sent to prison. “
