Bayern Munich have suspended Sadio Mané after he allegedly beat teammate Leroy Sané following their 3-0 Champions League quarterfinals defeat to Manchester City.

FC Bayern announced on Thursday that Mané would not be in the Bundesliga game against Hoffenheim on Saturday due to “misconduct”. The team also said Mané will be fined for his actions.

Sané’s lip was reportedly bleeding after the altercation with Mané following the loss of the road.

Mané, the 31-year-old Senegalese striker, joined FC Bayern from Liverpool in 2022. In 20 appearances he has scored six goals and provided four assists for Bayern, including three goals in the Champions League. Sané, the 27-year-old German winger, has played for Bayern since 2020 after spending five years at Manchester City. He has scored seven goals with five assists for Bayern in 17 starts this season, including four in the Champions League.

It’s unclear what the two argued about, but the way Bayern lost probably played a big part. Not only did they give up three goals and lose their first Champions League game of the season, Bayern also failed to score despite having a 56-44 possession advantage over City. Bayern also only had four shots on target – three of which came from Sané. Mané also only came into play in the 69th minute, just before City scored twice in six minutes

It probably didn’t help either that Bayern sacked coach Julian Nagelsmann three weeks before the quarter-final game and replaced him with former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain manager Thomas Tuchel. The teams play in the second half of their home-and-home series in Munich on Wednesday as Bayern need to beat City by four goals to advance to the semi-finals.
