Brenden Aaronson’s star is born, Messi and Neymar put on a show
The English Premier League, German Bundesliga and French Ligue 1 started their 2022-23 seasons on Friday smoke and Superclub Firepower. On Saturday, the Americans stole the show.
A few hours after Fulham captain Tim Ream beat Liverpool to a 2-2 draw, Brenden Aaronson capped off a sparkling debut at Leeds United with an apparent winner in the 74th minute.
The 21-year-old from South Jersey, dubbed ‘Medford Messi’, had already done so buzzed around for the first EPL spot he’d ever graced. He helped equalize in the first half. Then, with Leeds and Wolves tied at 1-1, he fired into the box to seemingly end a Patrick Bamford cross – and an attacking move started by fellow American Tyler Adams – to secure a 2-1 win to gain.
Replays later showed that the finishing touches came from Wolves defender Rayan Ait-Nouri and Aaronson’s winner became an own goal. But “it came off my shin in there somewhere, so I take it to my credit,” he said after the game. And yet, “USA” chants rang out around Elland Road – as Leeds American head coach Jesse Marsch also celebrated an opening weekend win.
Elsewhere in the Prem, Bournemouth beat Aston Villa, Spurs ran away from Southampton and Newcastle beat Nottingham Forest. In the last game of the day Chelsea withstood Everton.
In Germany, on the other hand US striker Jordan Pefok opened his Bundesliga account with a brilliant header. and spurred Union Berlin on to win the Berlin derby. And Dortmund held firm to beating Bayer Leverkusen in a clash of Bayern Munich’s top two title challengers.
In France, Neymar and Lionel Messi put on a show.
