Charges have been dropped against Carlishia Hood, who is accused of ordering a 14-year-old son to shoot a man at a hot dog stand
A Chicago woman arrested for murder after allegedly ordering her 14-year-old son to shoot a man at a fast-food restaurant was released Monday after prosecutors dropped charges against her and the teenager had.
Carlishia Hood, 35, and her son were charged last week with first-degree murder in the June 18 shooting of Jeremy Brown, 32, at the Maxwell Street Express hot dog store, CBS Chicago reported.
Hood and Brown got into an argument while waiting for food and the mother reportedly texted her son, who was waiting in the car, to help her.
The young teenager is accused of having shot the man with the firearm on his mother’s orders.
However, new evidence came to light over the weekend, leading the Cook County prosecutor to reconsider the charges.
A previously unreleased video circulated on social media of Brown Hood brutally hitting the head in the restaurant.
“Based on our ongoing review and in light of new evidence, the Cook County Attorney’s Office decided today to dismiss the charges against Carlisha Hood and her 14-year-old son,” the office said in a statement Monday. “Due to the facts, evidence and the law, we are unable to meet our burden of proof in prosecuting these cases.”
Both Hood – who was being held on $3 million bail – and her son – who was being held without bail in a juvenile detention center – were released Monday after the charges were dropped.
Hood declined to comment on her release to CBS Chicago, but her attorney and family said they felt justice had finally been done and were relieved to see the mother and son return home.
The couple turned themselves in after police released surveillance footage showing the minor entering the restaurant and allegedly shooting Brown in the back.
According to prosecutors, Hood had been waiting in line for her food when she and Brown began an argument.

In the new video, Brown can be seen threatening to knock out the mother if she “says anything else” before finally hitting her on the head.
As Hood crouches in the corner, he hits her at least twice more while other customers gasp and flee the small building.
The video pauses after a gunshot is heard.

At that point, prosecutors said, the 14-year-old was standing in the doorway and witnessed his mother being beaten.
He pulled out a gun – according to local broadcaster his mother had permission to carry it – and allegedly shot Brown in the back.
The wounded man fled the restaurant but was pursued by the young teenager and his mother, who reportedly told her son to keep shooting and kill the man.

According to prosecutors, the teenager fired more shots, hitting Brown twice in total.
The man later died from his injuries.
The mother then allegedly ordered her son to shoot a woman who laughed and encouraged Brown during the earlier fight, prosecutors said, according to CBS Chicago’s initial report.
Hood reportedly tried to take the gun away from her son, but he pushed her away and they both fled the scene in their car without harming the woman.
A CBS legal analyst said the mother and son acted in self-defense.
“You have the right to use deadly force to stop that violence against another person, and that’s what happened in this case, and that’s exactly why the prosecution dropped this case today,” said Irv Miller, legal analyst at CBS 2.
Neither Hood nor her son have a criminal record.
