Christen Press and Tobin Heath leave Manchester United
Christen Press and Tobin Heath are leaving Manchester United, the club confirmed on Thursday.
The US women’s national team signed a one-year contract with the English team in September. They helped Manchester United finish fourth in the 2020-21 Women’s Super League.
Press scored four goals in 17 games and Heath scored four in 11 games. Heath was sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained while training in January. She also had a setback in her rehab and returned to the US to recover instead of staying on the team.
“Everyone at the club wants to thank them and wish them the best of luck,” Manchester United wrote in a statement.
Their jersey sales reportedly surpassed any male star at the club in the three days after they were signed.
Press, 32, has spent the last two seasons with the Utah Royals in the NWSL. Heath, 33, has played for the Portland Thorns since 2013. Your rights are currently with the NWSL expansion Racing Louisville.
Press, Heath goes to Olympia
The fastest they will be dressed in red, white and blue for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. They join Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe as the five forwards on the USWNT roster were announced on Wednesday.
The average cadre age is over 30, the USWNT’s oldest Olympic list in history. The 18 selected have a total of 2,004 national team appearances. Heath, who coach Vlatko Andonovski said is “on schedule” to recover before the tournament, is contesting her fourth Olympic participation.
Both Press, who competed in their second Olympic Games, and Heath were in the 2015 and 2019 world championship squad.
Press, Heath and the USWNT will play two friendly games against Mexico in East Hartford, Conn next month. The first Olympic competition will take place on July 21, two days before the opening ceremony, against the enemy Sweden, who knocked out the USA at the 2016 Olympic Games.
