Christian Pulisic scores historic goal (video)
With one goal, Christian Pulisic wrote a lot of history and started his own hype machine.
Pulisic brought Real Madrid defenders to school and scored the 1-1 draw in the Champions League semi-finals. He was the first American men’s player to score in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
He’s also, via TruMedia Statistics Whiz Paul Carr, the first US international to score multiple goals in the Champions League, the first to score in a competition against Real Madrid, and the country’s top scorer in the Champions League. His five goals exceeded Sacha Kljestan’s four.
Watch Pulisic systematically deconstruct Real Madrid with a series of touches and a precise finish (via CBS Sports):
Questions about Pulisic’s skills have largely been wiped out by his game, especially last summer when the Premier League resumed after the coronavirus interruption. The 22-year-old’s problem was his health, having recently returned from another injury spell. When he’s fit, he’s quite simply one of the most effective players at Chelsea.
Pulisic was replaced on the hour by manager Thomas Tuchel for Hakim Ziyech as part of a three-fold substitution.
Karim Benzema equalized in the first half for Real Madrid with a spectacular touch and finish:
The second semi-final will be played in London next Wednesday, May 5th. The winner will face either Paris Saint-Germain or Manchester City in the Champions League final on May 29th.
