Crew player Lucas Zelarayán shoots a wild goal from midfield in stoppage time and defeats Fire

Lucas Zelarayán had a ridiculous winner on Saturday night in Chicago.

The Columbus Crew star fired a wild goal from behind the midfield line and sent them past the Chicago Fire in added time. The goal came from almost 61 yards away and will undoubtedly be in contention for the best goal scored in Major League Soccer all season.

“I didn’t know what to do,” Zelarayán said of MLS. “I was so excited and took off my shirt. I’ve seen this celebration before and, yes, I was so excited. I did this because I was crazy.”

The goal was Zelarayán’s second goal from 50 meters out in the last two seasons. Last October he scored a goal from just over 56 meters away.

“It’s funny because I spoke to Lucas earlier in the year,” Crew head coach Wilfried Nancy said of MLS. “He’s had a couple of chances like that and I said to him, ‘Hey, try it. If that’s a logical move, try it. I do not have a problem with it.’ Today he did it and when the ball bounced, I saw the ball say, ‘He’ll do it, he’ll do it.’ When he touched the ball, it was beautiful.

Cucho Hernández scored the first goal for the crew in the 59th minute on Saturday night to give them a 1-0 lead. Chicago’s Zherdan Shaqiri then leveled the game in the 88th minute.

Zelarayán has scored eight goals in 15 starts this season, his fourth with the crew. Columbus holds an 8-3-6 record, ranking sixth in the Eastern Conference standings.
