Tea drinkers who drink more than two cups a day are likely to live longer than those who don’t drink, according to a new study.

The results, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, concluded that the beneficial effects appear to be unaffected by whether the tea is black, with milk, with sugar, the temperature at which it is drunk, or genetic variants affecting the tea affect the rate at which people metabolize caffeine.

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health used data from the UK Biobank which found that 85% of the half million men and women aged 40 to 69 reported drinking tea regularly.

Of these, 89% said they drank black tea.

The study was conducted using a questionnaire answered from 2006 to 2010 and followed up for more than a decade.

Regular consumption of black tea (the most commonly consumed tea in Europe) was found to be associated with a modest reduction in mortality of 9% to 13% over 10 years in a median person compared to those not drinking tea Age was related to the mostly white adult general population, particularly with regard to cardiovascular disease.

Fernando Rodríguez Artalejo, professor of preventive medicine and public health at the Autonomous University of Madrid, described the research as a “significant advance in this field” and said most of the studies were conducted in Asia, where green tea is most commonly consumed. and the few outside Asia were “small and inconclusive in their findings”.

He said the study does not conclusively prove that tea is the cause of lower premature mortality among tea drinkers, as it cannot be ruled out that this is due to other health factors associated with tea consumption.

Another unanswered question is whether people who don’t drink tea should start improving their health.

He said: “Studies should be conducted with repeated measures of tea consumption over time and compare the mortality of those who do not consume tea consistently with those who have started consuming tea or increased their consumption over time, and those who have been drinking tea for years.”
