Elon Musk begins firing Twitter within hours – and offices are closed | Science and technology news

Twitter employees will find out later today whether they will be fired – a week after Elon Musk took over.

The social network’s offices are temporarily closed and workers will know their fate by 4pm UK time.

Those who lose their jobs will receive a notification on their personal email addresses, while those employees who remain will receive an email on their work accounts.

An internal memo said: “In order to put Twitter on a healthy path, on Friday we will go through the difficult process of shedding our global workforce.”

Twitter said its offices will be temporarily closed and access to all ID cards will be suspended “to ensure the security of all employees, as well as Twitter’s systems and customer data.”

It comes after the company moved last month to reassure employees it had no plans for mass layoffs in the wake of a US press report that Mr Musk planned to lay off 75% of its 7,500 employees after taking over 44 billion.
