Eric Schmitt wins GOP nomination in Missouri Senate race

Eric Schmitt defeated disgraced former Gov. Eric Greitens to win the Republican nomination in the Missouri Senate primary.

Schmitt will seek to fill the seat of Republican Senator Roy Blunt, who announced last year that he would not seek a third term in Washington.

Schmitt halted an unlikely political comeback for Greitens, whose career has been marred by scandals including allegations by his wife earlier this year that he physically and emotionally abused her and their children before their divorce.

Schmitt also defeated St. Louis attorney Mark McCloskey, who rose to fame after a photo of him and his wife pointing guns at BLM protesters outside their home went viral. Other candidates in the running were US Rep. Vicky Hartzler and Rep. Billy Long.

Former President Donald Trump threw a wrench into the race on Monday after issuing a statement endorsing “Eric,” though he never made it clear which Eric — Greitens or Schmitt — he endorsed. Both candidates quickly claimed and solicited Trump’s support.

Greitens resigned as governor in disgrace in June 2018 after it was revealed he took a nude photo of his hairstylist without her consent and used it to keep her quiet while they were involved in an extramarital affair in 2015.

He was charged with invasion of privacy, but the charges were dropped months later after allegations the lead investigator and local prosecutor mishandled the investigation.

Greitens also faced separate charges for illegally using a donor list from a charity he founded to raise funds for his campaign. Those charges were also dropped when he resigned after the Missouri House opened an impeachment inquiry.

Schmitt, 47, has garnered significant attention for his high-profile lawsuits as attorney general. He sued China over the coronavirus, Missouri school districts over mask mandates and over teaching critical race theory, and the city of St. Louis over their plan to budget $1 million to allow women to travel abroad for abortions.

He will face off against either Marine veteran Lucas Kunce – who never held office – or Trudy Busch Valentine, an heiress to the Busch family fortune, in November.
