Fantasy-style MLS All-Star voting introduced
The Major League Soccer All-Star Game 2021, which is about the best results of the MLS against Liga MX, will contain some changes in the voting process.
For the first time, a concerted vote of fans, players and the media will help select 12 of the 26 players. For the past few years, it has been a media-created vote for fans and players to make their selections, but this season MLS is moving towards a system more like filling out a fantasy soccer roster.
Rather than generically choosing between defenders, midfielders and strikers, this new method will divide players into seven specific positions (goalkeeper, right defender, center defender, left defender, defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder and striker / winger).
The top player in each starting position from the combined votes will be named an All-Star, and the 12th winner will be the one with the next highest total number of votes.
MLS head coach Bob Bradley will be responsible for the selection of 12 more players himself, and MLS commissioner Don Garber will round out the list with two selections.
The Liga MX team and coach will consist of the 2021 Balón de Oro Prize winners and another selection of players. The celebrations, which include a skill contest, will take place on August 24th and 25th at the Banc of California Stadium.
“On the MLS side, there are Mexican players like Chicharito, [Carlos] Vela and Jonathan [dos Santos] will likely play, but Cruz Azul just won the championship and we have some great talent, “said Mikel Arriola, Executive President of Liga MX, in Los Angeles at the ASG’s official announcement. will want to say to some opponents, ‘Listen, why did you leave when we are better?’ and vice versa. We have to make sure that this element of rivalry instills. “
Fan voting is now possible via the MLS app and on MLSsoccer.com.
