JJ Watt and Kealia Watt invest in English Premier League club Burnley
JJ Watt and his wife, former NWSL player Kealia Watt, became minority owners of English football club Burnley this week, he and the team announced on Monday.
“When you invest in a club that has been around since 1882, you have to have great respect for its history and tradition,” said JJ Watt. “We understand that we don’t just invest in the squad and the coach, but also in the city and its people. We take this responsibility very seriously and intend to work hard to earn their trust and support.”
It’s another big moment for Watt, who announced his retirement from the NFL at the end of the 2022 season after a 12-year career with the Houston Texans and the Arizona Cardinals. Kealia played in the NWSL from 2014 to 2021 with the Houston Dash and the Chicago Red Stars. She also played for the USWNT in 2016. The couple married in 2020 and welcomed their son, Koa, last October.
In a 2021 interview, Watt said he became a fan of English football playing the FIFA video game and eventually began to follow and support Chelsea.
“It was the songs, the traditions — very different from an American stadium, very different from an American fan experience,” Watt said in 2021. “No big video boards, no commercialism, no cheerleaders. There is no added thrill or anything. It was literally all about the game.”
Kealia, on the other hand, has been a part of the football community her entire life.
“In the US, I’ve seen the NWSL grow into something really incredible,” she said via the Burnley team website, “and we’d love to be a part of the women’s team’s growth here and a part of their journey. ”
Burnley then goes to the English Premier League it ended at the top of the EFL Championshipthe second tier of English football, with 98 points.
The squad broke a league record after securing promotion with seven games remaining in the season and winning 10 straight league games – setting a league record. The Clarets are managed by former Manchester City and Belgium international star Vincent Kompany and play about four hours north-west of London.
