Julie Ertz returns to the National Women’s Soccer League.

The USA women’s national team midfielder and two-time player of the year has signed a one-year contract with Angel City FC, the club announced on Monday. It’s the latest step in Ertz’s comeback to professional football following her birth in August.

“I am delighted to join one of the most exciting clubs in the world, Angel City FC,” Ertz said in a statement. “From the moment they traded my rights until now, they have been unwavering in their support of my journey. I can’t wait to work with the team and finally experience the great matchday atmosphere.”

Ertz most recently played in the NWSL with the Chicago Red Stars, who voted them #3 overall in 2014. She played in 95 games for the club, scoring six goals and helping guide them to seven straight play-off appearances. She has not played in the NWSL since 2021.

Ertz was also a mainstay of the USWNT. She helped the United States win the 2015 and 2019 World Cups, and she won a bronze medal with the team at the Tokyo Olympics. She returned to the court for the first time since games with the USWNT earlier this month, playing in the half of the United States’ 1-0 win over Ireland on Tuesday. Ertz, 31, is gearing up to feature in the squad for the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand this summer.

“Julie is a world-class player who has proven herself time and again at both club and national team level,” Angel City manager Freya Coombe said in a statement. “In addition to her quality on the ball, she will help us defend further up the field and against opponents switching. Her leadership experience and her experience as a medalist at World Cups and Olympic Games will no doubt help us in our quest for a championship.”

Angel City FC is one of the newest teams in the NWSL. The club joined the league in 2022 along with San Diego Wave FC. The league previously announced plans to expand to Utah and Northern California in 2024, bringing the number of teams in the league to 14.

After a 2-2 draw against Racing Louisville FC on Saturday, Angel City are currently 1-1-1 this season. They will face OL Reign on Wednesday. It’s unclear when Ertz, whose husband Zach Ertz, tight end of the Arizona Cardinals, will make her debut at the club.
