Juventus lose 10 points in Serie A after appeal over transfer scandal

Juventus will drop just 10 points instead of 15 this season due to their role in the “capital gains case”, the Italian Football Federation announced on Monday.

That would see Juventus drop from second place in Serie A to seventh place on 59 points, just outside of any spot in European league competition with two matchdays left on the league calendar. Juventus are just one game behind Roma and two behind Atalanta. Table leaders Napoli remain clearly at the top of the table with 86 points.

The verdict also acquitted eight club managers, including former Juventus vice-president Pavel Nedved.

“Juventus Football Club takes note of the decision of the FIGC Court of Appeal some time ago and reserves the right to read the reasons in order to consider a possible appeal to the CONI Guarantee Committee,” said the The club tweeted in a statement shortly after the verdict, translated from Italian to English via Google. “What was determined by the fifth instance of judgment in this matter, which began more than a year ago, triggers great bitterness in the club and among its millions of fans, who, in the absence of clear rules, are being extremely punished with the lawsuit.” Sanctions that violate the principle of proportionality seem to take into account.

An Italian court originally ruled in January that Juventus would lose 15 points for raising prices for outgoing players in transfer deals to circumvent FIFA’s financial fair play rules. Although Juventus were not the only club to engage in such measures, its status as a listed company led the company to allegedly mislead shareholders and use illegal accounting maneuvers on its balance sheet.

Juventus have won 59 domestic leagues and cups since 1905, including 36 league titles, but only five European league titles: two UEFA Champions League titles and three UEFA Europa League titles.
