Star Wars stars Anthony Daniels and Billy Dee Williams have returned to the franchise that made them famous, moving from the big screen to video games by voicing their characters in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (TSS). to have.

Daniels famously played C-3PO in 10 war of stars films, while Williams played Lando Calrissian in three of them.

The new game, released on Tuesday, is the first release in the LEGO Star Wars series in six years – and British developer TT Games includes all nine core films.

Since the original game, which only included the prequel films, was released in 2005, the series has sold more than 50 million copies and has five entries in total.

TSS is the most ambitious episode yet, and the stars were more than happy to reprise their roles.

“Antony Daniels loves it – all his lines are from the heart”

Executive producer James Burgon told Sky News that Daniels was very excited about stepping back into the shiny shoes of 3PO and often gave instructions on how the character would speak or behave.

“He loves it, I don’t think anyone enjoys playing the same character over and over again,” he said.

“So to have that insight from Anthony Daniels, who’s been playing it for decades, is just an amazing level of detail – all the C3PO lines are heartfelt.”

Unlike the first LEGO Star Wars games, TSS is fully voiced and also features actors from outside the films.

James Arnold Taylor, who voiced Obi-Wan Kenobi in the animated TV series Clone Wars, and Being Human star Sam Witwer, who voiced Darth Maul and Emperor Palpatine, also reprise their roles.

The developers worked 100 hour weeks to complete the game

Originally planned for 2020, TT Games developed the game over several years but delayed the release several times.

Some members of the team have since reported working close to 100-hour weeks to complete the project, which has fueled concerns in the games industry over the past few years about so-called crunch culture.

The game differs from previous chapters by offering a fully open world experience that allows the player to traverse the galaxy far, far away at their own pace.

The Free Play feature also returns to the series, allowing the player to replay levels with any character. More heroes will be added in the coming weeks, including those from the hit Disney+ show The Mandalorian.

“Everything has been checked except for the map of the galaxy”

Burgon says senior Star Wars executives like Kathleen Kennedy and Jon Favreau consulted on the content of the story and were satisfied with the accurate depiction of the galaxy.

“Anything that has to do with story is very important to LucasFilm,” he said, referring to the production company that George Lucas founded in 1971 and is now a Disney subsidiary.

“So many eyes at LucasFilm saw this game and all loved it.

“Everything has been checked except for the map of the galaxy. It was definitely up for review. There was some discussion about specific planets in specific locations.”

This makes the in-game galactic map of the planets the first-ever in the history of the franchise to be stamped by LucasFilm itself.

The legendary original soundtrack by John Williams is also included, along with sound effects and other assets provided to the developers by LucasFilm.

For sound quality reasons, however, all lines of dialogue have been re-recorded.

TSS benefits from improved graphics available on PS5 and Xbox Series X, making the game feel much smoother than previous versions.

Combat has also received an overhaul, having previously been criticized for being too easy. For example, players can now aim at enemies more accurately, and combo attacks add a new level of skill to the game.

TSS already has an 85% Metacritic score, showing that it has been well received by critics. However, some new gameplay features – like the upgrade and cover system – were described as superfluous.
