Lionel Messi signs again with Barcelona
Lionel Messi has signed a new five-year deal with Barcelona, but it comes with a significant pay cut, ESPN reported on Wednesday.
Messi became a free agent when his contract with Barcelona expired on June 30th. He reportedly showed an interest in Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City after showing an interest in leaving the club he’d spent 20 years with.
The forward’s previous deal was $ 594 million over four years. His new deal is reportedly less and had to wait for the club to relieve players and reduce the salaries paid out. Barcelona has over $ 1.18 billion in debt.
Spanish league rules limit a club’s spending to a percentage of club revenue, and La Liga officials had announced they would not adjust that rule for Barcelona, according to The New York Times. The club had to cut around $ 240 million to register new players, which had to do with Messi as his contract expired.
Messi, 34, won his first major trophy with Argentina at the Copa America last weekend. He is currently on vacation with his family and will return to Barcelona later this summer. The league game starts on August 15th against Real Sociedad.
Messi, a six-time Ballon d’Or winner, asked for Barcelona last summer and was reportedly “eager” to join Manchester City. The rules of financial fair play also played a role in this possible step.
The football star joined the club’s academy in 2000 and played 778 games for Barcelona, breaking Xavi Hernandez’s performance record last season. His 672 goals scored are a club record and he has helped Barca win 10 La Liga titles and four Champions League titles.
