ManU suspend Mason Greenwood after disturbing allegations

Manchester United announced on Sunday that they were suspending striker Mason Greenwood after extremely disturbing images and audio clips surfaced online showing injuries Greenwood allegedly inflicted on his girlfriend and audio of him allegedly sexually assaulting her.

“Mason Greenwood will not be returning to practice or playing games until further notice,” the statement said. In a statement released on Sunday, ManU said they were “aware of the images and allegations circulating on social media” and “will not make any further comments until the facts are established”.

The photos and audio files were posted to the woman’s Instagram account and included a series of photos of injuries, including numerous bruises on various parts of the body and a bloody lip, all allegedly inflicted by 20-year-old Greenwood. One photo was captioned, “Anyone who wants to know what Mason Greenwood is actually doing to me.” An audio clip was also released that appeared to show a man (allegedly Greenwood) sexually assaulting a woman. The content of the now-deleted post was stored on social media, But please be warned before clicking: the images and sound are graphic and disturbing.

Police arrest an unnamed suspect in his 20s

Greater Manchester Police also released a statement on Sunday, saying they were aware of the woman’s social media post and had arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of rape and assault.

The arrested suspect, whose name has not been released, remains in custody for questioning. The investigations are ongoing.

Nike, which sponsors Greenwood, released this statement to The Athletic:

“We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to monitor the situation closely.”
