Marcus Rashford’s Amazing Response to Racial Abuse on Social Media

Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford continues to display grace, class and intelligence in the face of horrific online abuse.

Rashford had directed a lot of racial abuse against him after Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal on Saturday, but he refused to bend down to their level to respond. Rather than posting screenshots of some racist tweets, he showed why he’s a role model for kids – and adults – everywhere.

As a black athlete, Rashford has heard every horrific insult under the sun. The abuse he gets is nothing new, so he lets the racist internet trolls know that it is impossible for them to influence him.

Premier League, Football Association condemn racial abuse

Rashford becomes the third Black Manchester United player to face intense online racial abuse in less than a week. Axel Tuanzebe and Anthony Martial received a series of racist messages on social media after losing to Sheffield United on Wednesday. Romaine Sawyers of West Bromwich Albion and Reece James of Chelsea also received racist messages on social media last week.

The Premier League executive director Richard Masters released a statement on Friday condemning all racial abuse.

“I am appalled at the racial abuse players received this week,” Masters said of ESPN. “Racist behavior of any kind is unacceptable and nobody should have to deal with it. Tackling online hatred is a priority for football, and I believe social media companies need to do more.

“We in the Premier League will continue to support players, managers and their families who experience discriminatory online abuse. Thanks to our central reporting system, we were able to take immediate action in such cases and investigate every report received, taking legal action whenever possible.

“We are in regular dialogue with social media companies and ask them to do more against discriminatory abuse on their platforms. We want abusive messages to be removed faster and the identification and prohibition of offenders to be improved. “

The football association reiterated these views in a tweet on Saturday.

Police initiate an investigation

Greater Manchester Police announced on Sunday that they have opened an investigation into the abuse against Tuanzebe, Martial and Rashford.

West Midlands police had already opened an investigation into the abuse of Saywers and announced on Friday that they had arrested a 49-year-old man suspected of sending Sawyers racist messages on social media.
