Megan Rapinoe celebrates the baby of her teammates
Russell Westbrook is known to mock defeated opponents with his signature rock-the-baby celebration, a move that generally created confusion until he explained it after dropping it on Patrick Beverley in 2018.
“Yes, you have little children, you have little babies, put them to sleep,” Westbrook said of Beverley. “That’s what happened. Little guards, you have to rock them.”
Rapinoe rocks baby in USWNT win against Brazil
The taunt, which resonated in the NBA, gained new life – and meaning – on Sunday when the U.S. women’s national team took on Brazil in the She Believes Cup. Megan Rapinoe scored the second of the USA’s two goals in a 2-0 win and sent a one-timer into the network towards the end of the second half after submission by Lindsey Horan.
She immediately ran to a base camera, where she rocked the baby and blew a kiss.
Special meaning behind Rapinoe’s Baby Rock
Was this a message to their Brazilian defenders who proved helpless to stop them on Sunday? Unlikely. The message here was pretty clear – and much more literal than Westbrook’s.
Rapinoe’s USWNT teammates, Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris, did not join the team for this year’s She Believes Cup. The couple have bigger priorities right now – especially taking care of their newly adopted daughter Sloane Philips. Krieger and Harris announced the arrival of Sloane shortly after they were born on February 12 last week.
So Krieger and Harris probably watched Sunday’s game from home – as they paused feeding, changing diapers, and rocking the baby.
Sunday’s She Believes Cup win was second in two games for the US, who beat Canada 1-0 last week to open the round robin tournament. Team USA will end with a 3-0 game against Argentina on Wednesday.
