Mexican boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, 18, dies 5 days after being knocked out in a fight
An 18-year-old Mexican boxer died Thursday five days after she was knocked out and injured in a ring in Montreal. Groupe Yvon Michel, the organizer of the boxing event, said on Thursday that Jeanette Zacarias Zapata died on Saturday evening at the IGA Stadium as a result of a fight with Marie-Pier Houle.
“It was with great sadness and agony that we learned from a representative of her family that Jeanette Zacarias passed away at 3:45 pm this afternoon.” read the organizer’s statement. “We would like to extend our condolences to her family, loved ones, friends and especially her husband Jovanni Martinez, who was by her bed until her last moments.”
Zapata suffered a series of power strikes in the corner of the ring and after a solid uppercut the Mexican appeared stunned towards the end of round four. A last hook on the right let Zapata’s mouthguard fly out and she couldn’t go back to her corner after the bell rang.
Zapata, who seemed to be cramping while standing, was accompanied by her partner and trainer Jovanni Martinez, who quickly put her in the ring. The local medical team rushed to her side and she was immobilized on a stretcher before being taken to a hospital in an ambulance.
Yvon Michel, president of Groupe Yvon Michel, said in a briefing on Sunday that Zapata was put into a medically induced coma to calm her down and relax her body and brain, adding that the next two to five days are “critical”.
Zapata underwent a neurological exam for permission to fight in Montreal after she passed out in a fight in Mexico last May. according to CBC.
