Nike suspends the contract of Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood

Nike on Monday suspended its relationship with Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood after he was arrested on allegations of rape and abuse.

Greenwood was suspended from Manchester United on Sunday after multiple graphic images and audio clips surfaced on social media showing injuries he allegedly inflicted on his girlfriend and audio of him allegedly assaulting her.

He was then arrested by Greater Manchester Police on Sunday and remains in custody as of Monday.

“We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to monitor the situation closely,” Nike said of The Athletic.

Photos and audio were posted to the woman’s Instagram account, although the posts have since been deleted. They contained graphic images, including bruises on various parts of her body and a bloody lip. There was also an audio clip that appeared to show a man attacking a woman.

One photo was captioned, “Anyone who wants to know what Mason Greenwood is doing to me.”

The posts, which are graphic and disturbing, were saved elsewhere on social media.

Greenwood was arrested Sunday on suspicion of rape and assault after police launched an investigation. As the police announced on Monday, he is still in custody.

“Detectives have been given additional time to speak to a man in his 20s who is being held on suspicion of raping and assaulting a woman,” GMP said in a statement. via The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell. “The suspect was arrested yesterday afternoon and remains in custody. Investigations are ongoing and professional support is being offered to the victim.”

Greenwood has a contract with Manchester United until 2025. He has scored six goals so far this season.

The club suspended him and said on Monday that he would not provide legal support. He has arranged for personal representation, according to The Athletic.
