Elie Wiesel was born in what is now Romania in 1928 and was only 15 years old when he and his family were confiscated by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz. The Allied forces liberated him in 1945, but not before he lost both parents and one of his three sisters. The author, who shed light on the atrocities linked to the Holocaust, fought intolerance and campaigned for the causes linked to Israel – and won the Nobel Peace Prize in the process – died early Saturday at the age of 87. Charles Osgood reports.
