Plane crash kills President, 4 players from Brazilian club Palmas
The tragedy struck the Brazilian soccer club Palmas on Sunday when four players and the club’s president were killed in a plane crash, the club said.
“The plane took off and crashed at the end of the Tocantinense Aviation Association runway,” the club said via Reuters. “We regret to report that there are no survivors.”
The small plane took off on Sunday from the Tocantinense Aviation Association, a small airfield near Palmas, to bring club president Lucas Meira and players Lucas Praxedes, Guilherme Noe, Ranule and Marcus Molinari to a game in Goiania. The club said the pilot, whom they identified only as Wagner, also died.
Palmas, a fourth division club, were due to play a Brazilian cup game against Vila Nova on Monday. The journey from Palmas to Goiania is approximately 500 miles. The Brazilian Football Association has postponed the game, according to the Daily Mail.
