Progressive group launches anti-Biden 2024 campaign
A progressive group opposed to President Biden’s re-election in 2024 launched a campaign called “Don’t Run Joe” on Wednesday aimed at Democrats in New Hampshire.
RootsAction, a grassroots organization that supported Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT)’s 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns, launched its anti-Biden digital ad campaign a day after the midterm elections in hopes of rallying people against a second Biden term.
“It is clear that Joe Biden should not be the party’s presidential nominee in 2024,” a campaign press release said on Wednesday.
The Don’t Run Joe campaign uses digital ads with messages like “We can’t risk losing 2024. We shouldn’t bet on Joe Biden’s low approval rating”, “Now is not the time for flimsy measures! We need solid leadership to keep Republicans out of the White House in 2024” and “We need strong leadership to defeat Republicans in 2024. #DontRunJoe. Give the Democrats a Chance” to organize opposition to another Biden presidential nomination.
RootsAction is calling the campaign a “statewide organizing campaign” that will initially focus on Democrats in the Granite State, home of the first presidential primary, before rolling out more broadly.
Record levels of inflation have crushed Biden’s popularity in his second year in office. A Reuters-Ipsos poll released Monday showed Biden’s approval rating at 39%.
Despite a better-than-expected performance by Democrats on Tuesday’s Election Day, exit polls showed most voters were unenthusiastic about a second Biden term.
Two-thirds of voters in an NBC News exit poll said they didn’t want Biden on the ballot in 2024.
However, the president noted during a press briefing on Wednesday that he is expected to announce re-election in 2024 early next year.
“A bold and inspiring tour of the Oval Office will be essential,” website Don’t Run Joe says on its homepage about the meaning of 2024.
“Unfortunately, President Biden was neither courageous nor inspirational. And his re-election prospects appear bleak. With so much at stake, making him the flag-bearer of the Democratic Party in 2024 would be a tragic mistake,” the campaign adds.
RootsAction says it is seeking a 2024 Democratic Party candidate who will champion a “truly progressive agenda.”
