Russia-Ukraine conflict: World leaders react to Putin’s invasion, promise “firm response”

World leaders issued statements on Thursday, condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine, saying Russia will pay a price for disregarding international law.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Britain and its allies would unleash a massive package of economic sanctions to hobble the Russian economy after the Kremlin launched a “full-scale” invasion of neighbouring Ukraine.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said his country supports Ukraine’s battle for territorial integrity and views Russia’s attack as a “heavy blow” to regional stability and peace, repeating a call for a resolution of the crisis through dialogue.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said western sanctions would ensure Russia paid a “bitter price” for its military attack on Ukraine and make it clear that Russian President Vladimir Putin had made a “grave mistake”.

Western nations are expected to announce coordinated sanctions after earlier this week imposing a limited initial package that was criticized by some as a weak response to Russia’s recognition of two breakaway regions in Ukraine.
