Russia’s Mario Fernandes cleared after the fall against Finland
A Russian defender was freed from a vertebral injury after suffering a terrible fall in Wednesday’s European Championship match against Finland.
Russian Mario Fernandes tried to head the ball in the 26th minute of the game in Russia’s Saint Petersburg Stadium and landed directly on his back. Fernandez grabbed his neck almost immediately.
He had to be carried off the field with a brace on his head and neck and was taken to a local hospital.
Doctors found that he has not suffered any spinal damage and can travel to Moscow with the team. He is being kept under surveillance and it is unclear when he will return to the field.
Russia defeated Finland 1-0. In the last group game, it will meet Denmark on Monday in Copenhagen.
