Seven charged with the murder of Diego Maradona
Seven medics were charged with the murder of the death of football legend Diego Maradona, according to ESPN.
Maradona died in November, two weeks after brain surgery. He was 60 years old.
An investigation was opened after Maradona’s death. According to ESPN, prosecutors have charged seven fatalities, including his neurosurgeon.
Leopoldo Luque, the neurosurgeon who performed successful brain surgery on Maradona, and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, who treated the former Napoli star, are among the seven defendants. The two have denied any wrongdoing.
Prosecutors have asked that those accused of murder are not allowed to leave Argentina.
The Medical Board said Diego Maradona’s medical team acted “ruthlessly”.
Prosecutors also had a medical panel review the actions of Maradona’s medical team to determine how it was handling the situation. The Medical Board found that Maradona’s medical team acted “inappropriately, inappropriately, and recklessly” with Maradona. Leaked audio between Maradona’s doctors and entourage also indicated that Maradona was not treated properly until his death.
Members of the medical team, including two nurses, a nurse coordinator, a doctor, and a psychologist, were also charged with Maradona’s death.
If found guilty, the defendants face eight to 25 years in prison.
