The San Francisco 49ers ownership group is now in full control of Leeds United.

Leeds team owner Andrea Radrizzani agreed to the sale of his majority stake in the English soccer club to 49ers Enterprises on Friday night, the club announced. Radrizzani owned approximately 56% of the organization.

49ers Enterprises have reportedly committed to buying Leeds at a price of around US$213m, a figure that fell significantly after Leeds were relegated from the Premier League earlier in the year. Had the club stayed in the top flight, the value would have been closer to around $500m, according to The Athletic.

Radrizzani has been the majority shareholder of Leeds since 2017. He has since acquired a majority stake in Italian club Sampdoria.

New minority owners in the 49ers’ ownership group include New Orleans Pelicans forward Larry Nance Jr. and Indiana Pacers guard TJ McConnell.

49ers Enterprises president Paraag Marathe is expected to take over as Leeds chairman, according to The Athletic. Marathe has been Vice Chairman since 2011. Angus Kinnear is expected to remain managing director of the team. Elland Road Stadium is also expected to be fully owned by the 49ers Enterprises group.

49ers Enterprises first became a shareholder in Leeds in 2018. In 2020, the company increased its stake in the club to just over 30% and most recently to 44%.

The San Francisco 49ers are almost entirely owned by Denise and John York, and their son Jed is the team’s CEO. The York Family formed 49ers Enterprises as an investment arm to expand their reach outside of the NFL. The two teams are still very separate.

Leeds are just the latest club to be owned by an American corporation with ties to the NFL. The Glazer family, who own the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, are now working to sell Manchester United. Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan owns Fulham FC. Los Angeles Rams and Denver Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke also owns Arsenal FC.
