The LAPD bomb squad’s truck explodes during the explosion of fireworks
Over a dozen people were injured when a LAPD bomb squad truck was blown up during a planned detonation of illegal fireworks on Wednesday night.
The huge explosion came after authorities confiscated over £ 5,000 of illegal fireworks from a home in southern Los Angeles. One person was arrested, according to the CBSLA and the LAPD.
In addition to the injured, the explosion also destroyed nearby cars and damaged homes.
Seconds before it got haywire, the officers on the ground quickly backed away from the squad trailer. According to the CBSLA, the officer then yelled, “Fire in the hole!”
However, the LAPD in a Statement posted on Twitter said the cause of the explosion was unclear.
“As a precautionary measure, some of the fireworks were stored in our bomb squad trailer. It is unknown at this point what caused an explosion, ”the department said.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti released a statement Wednesday evening saying he is “closely monitoring the situation” and “deeply concerned about the injured.”
“I have directed the LAPD to investigate this incident fully so that we can better understand why this happened. Illegal fireworks are very dangerous and can cost lives, ”he said.
“We will prosecute those who use or own them to the fullest extent of the law.”
Those injured included nine LAPD officers, six civilians, and an officer from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Three of the civilians were seriously injured. The remaining victims all suffered minor injuries.
