Three tubers dead, two missing after driving over the North Carolina Dam
At least three people floating on a North Carolina river died when they drove over a dam on Wednesday night, authorities said.
Two other people in the group of nine tubers were still missing Thursday after passing the Duke Energy Dam along the Dan River, Rockingham County Emergency Services director Rodney Cates told reporters.
The incident was observed by a Duke Energy employee who called 911.
The four injured tubers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The authorities used boats and helicopters to try to find the missing people.
According to Cates, it’s not uncommon for recreation seekers to swim on the river near the dam. But usually people get out of their tubes or rafts and walk around the dam, which is marked with signs, he said.
The identities of the three deceased were not immediately disclosed.
