The number of coronavirus patients in U.S. hospitals has dropped below 50,000 – the lowest level in nearly four months, data shows.

According to the COVID Tracking Project, 48,870 patients were treated for the virus in hospitals on Saturday.

“For the first time since November 2, the number of people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 is below 50,000,” he said Organization wrote on Twitterr.

The number of hospitalizations has steadily declined from a peak of 132,474 patients enrolled on Jan. 6, data shows.

Hospital stays are an important metric for tracking progress in the pandemic because, unlike the number of cases, it is not affected by the number of tests performed.

The US also recorded 70,622 new infections and 1,822 virus-related deaths on Saturday, according to the data.
