US Soccer has received three more allegations of misconduct this week after the investigation was released
The US Football Association said it received three new reports of misconduct this week after the independent investigation into abuse and sexual misconduct within the NWSL was released, USSF President Cindy Parlow Cone told CNN Friday night.
Cone did not provide details on the new allegations or cases, but said they have been brought to the attention of the US Center for SafeSport, as well as other authorities.
“One of the great things to come out of this report is that it encourages more people to come forward,” Parlow Cone said on CNN.
“I also hope that now people feel safe to come forward or … learn where to go to report this because it’s so important,” she added. “We won’t be able to eradicate it unless bolder people come forward to tell us.”
The independent investigation, led by former US Attorney General Sally Yates, found “systemic” and “heartbreaking” abuse across women’s football. The 319-page report revealed new allegations of verbal, emotional and sexual misconduct and said both the NWSL and the federation had “failed” countless players.
“Our investigation has uncovered a league where abuse and misconduct has become systemic, involving multiple teams, coaches and victims,” she wrote in the report. “Abuse in the NWSL is rooted in a deeper culture of women’s football, starting in the youth leagues, which normalizes verbally abusive coaching and blurs the lines between coaches and players.”
Half of the NWSL coaches were either fired or resigned over the past season over allegations. Chicago Red Stars owner Arnim Whisler was ousted as the team’s chairman Wednesday for his involvement in alleged abuse of a former coach, and the Portland Thorns fired two executives over their involvement. Thorns owner Merritt Paulson has also retired as a decision-maker from the club.
Many players in the sport are calling for significant changes and removal from owners and other stakeholders, including USWNT star Megan Rapinoe.
“Society also needs to change and evolve and make it safer for women to complain about it in the workplace or on a team,” Parlow Cone said on CNN.
“It’s going to be a long process. It will not be a quick fix.”
