USMNT’s Paul Arriola apologizes after offensive tweets resurfaced
A member of the U.S. men’s national team has apologized after his offensive tweets from nearly a decade ago resurfaced earlier this week.
Paul Arriola, currently on loan for Swansea City from D.C. United Plays said he was ashamed of the tweets and insisted he has grown as a person since the tweets in question were posted:
The tweets in a group of screengrabs Currently floating around are all from 2012 when Arriola was 17 years old and a member of the Los Angeles Galaxy Youth Academy. In the tweets, Arriola expresses disapproval of female color commentators, citing a Rick Ross lyric that includes a racist arc, using the same racist arc while apparently interacting with a friend, and joking about black swimming.
All tweets have since been deleted.
Arriola signed with Tijuana in Mexico in 2013 and moved to the United States in 2017 for a record $ 3 million fee. He was loaned to Swansea City, which currently plays in the second-rate EFL championship, for the remainder of the season last month. Since 2016, he has played 35 games for the USMNT, scoring eight goals.
Swansea City released a statement saying Arriola will have agreed to undergo bias training if he returns to United:
Swansea City was made aware of historical social media posts before arriving at the club by Paul Arriola.
We want to make it clear that we do not tolerate any discriminatory behavior from people who are associated with our club.
Swansea City raised the issue with Paul and we support his decision to be the one to bring up these historic tweets and apologize.
Paul is determined to participate in both subconscious and conscious bias training that he will conduct upon his return to DC United.
Swansea City will not provide any further comments in this regard.
The U.S. Football Association issued another statement calling Arriola’s tweets unacceptable and reiterating its commitment to an inclusive environment:
