WhatsApp Delays Business Function Start Following a Science & Tech News Privacy Breach
WhatsApp delays rollout of new business features after users questioned the company’s data-sharing practices.
The delay is a setback to his plan to generate revenue by facilitating commercial exchanges through the messaging app Facebook Acquired in 2014 for $ 19 billion but has been slow to monetize.
Whatsapp said users will no longer have to review and accept their updated terms until February 8th – and no accounts will be suspended or deleted until that date.
Advocates of data protection pounced on the WhatsApp changes and pointed out that Facebook, according to its own statements, does not adequately support consumer interests when handling their data.
Many have suggested that users would migrate to other platforms, and competing app Signal climbed the App Store charts on iPhone and the Google Play Store on Android after WhatsApp’s plan first came to light.
WhatsApp had insisted that the planned update would not affect face-to-face conversations, which it said it will continue to have end-to-end encryption or expand its ability to share data with Facebook.
“The update includes new options for users to notify a company on WhatsApp, and provides more visibility into how we collect and use data,” the company said.
WhatsApp announced that it has set a new target date for the Business Tools launch on May 15th and will be gradually reaching out to users to review the policy changes.
