Zack Steffen is the first USMNT player to win the title
Forty-eight US internationals have played in the Premier League in their 29-year history.
One of them can finally lay claim to the championship title.
Goalkeeper Zack Steffen was the first American to win the Premier League on Tuesday after Manchester City won the title. He appeared in one game that season, a 3-1 win over Chelsea on January 3, and served primarily as a substitute for Ederson.
The closest American to winning the EPL was Tim Howard, who had spent four years at Manchester United. The Red Devils failed to win the league there in his first three seasons, and he was loaned out to Everton in the fourth, where he signed a perpetual contract during the 2007 winter transfer window. Therefore, he played in this campaign, which ended never for United at the club to recapture the league title.
Steffen is the goalkeeper of choice for the USMNT. He signed with Man City two summers ago and spent the 2019-20 season on loan from Fortuna Düsseldorf in the German Bundesliga.
The 26-year-old Pennsylvania native has played mostly in the FA Cup and League Cup, both of which are national tournaments in England, this season. He played a total of 10 games and helped City win the League Cup on April 25th. Steffen also started the last game of the Champions League group stage in December, a 3-0 win over Marseille.
He has the chance to become the first American man to play in the Champions League final later this month, though Ederson is expected to begin the game against Chelsea on May 29. Steffen is only a year younger than Ederson, which means he continues to play town could be hard to come by.
Whatever his future, Steffen is already in the record books.
